Johanna was on her way back into the cottage when she heard the sixth shot. What she saw as she came through the door sent her into a panic. Holic and the guard were on the floor, the color red everywhere. Holic was struggling to sit up, one of his deformed hands pressed into his bleeding stomach, the other locked around his gun.Oh, God…

She saw him raise the gun again and aim it at the wall. Her eyes followed and she saw Adolf slumped over.

“No! No!” She scrambled over the dead guard who had fallen backward out the door. Holic looked at her. “Bitch,” he muttered, then he slumped back, and the gun fell from his hand.

Johanna rushed to Adolf and dropped down on her knees. She pulled him up, saw the blood oozing from his side. “Adolf! Adolf, say something!”

“Are you all right? I can’t see you. Tell me you’re all right.”

“Yes. Put down the gun, I need to see how badly you’ve been hit.”

He continued to hold it. “What about Holic?”

“Dead.”

“The guard?”

“Dead.”

He laid the gun on the floor. “You’re sure you’re all right?”

“Yes. But you’re not. I don’t know what to do.”

His hand moved along his side, probing the wound. “Not too bad. Went through.”

Her relief overwhelmed Johanna with tears. “I was so afraid for you.”

“Find my bag and get the medical kit.”

On her feet Johanna stepped over the bodies, searching the outer room for Adolf’s bag. She spotted it and opened it, grabbed the medical kit. She heard a noise behind her and turned quickly.

Adolf was standing in the middle of the room with his hands stretched out. “Johanna?”
